Holy Week: Day 1

Day One: Clean House

Overview

After 3 long years of ministry, at the age of 33, Jesus begins the final week of his life. Throughout these last 7 days (Monday through Sunday), He experienced anger, fear, betrayal, pain, and victory. As the day of His death drew closer, He lived every second with purpose. Join RTLA Church as we dive into scripture and meditate on Jesus’ last week.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Matthew 21:12-13

The arrival to Jerusalem the day before (Sunday) had been a triumphant one. Multitudes received Jesus with praise and placed palm branches at the feet of the donkey He rode on. This was symbolic as it reflected the homecoming of a king. Today, this is known as Palm Sunday. While the reception on Sunday had been celebratory, Monday was drastically different.

Due to the Jewish festivity of the Passover (a remembrance of how the spirit of death passed over the Israeli houses that had lamb blood in Exodus 12) Jews from all over the nation would come to the temple in Jerusalem to present their sacrifices as offerings.

As Jesus entered the temple on Monday, He noticed that many were selling sacrificial animals to their own people at an unjust price. In other words, they were financially taking advantage of a holy offering. As Jesus saw this, he was filled with anger. “He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves. He said to them, ‘The Scriptures declare, “‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer,’” but you have turned it into a den of thieves!’ ” (Matthew 21:12-13). This was a vital moment as Jesus’ approach confronted the wrongdoings of many, causing Him to lose favor before the religious leaders and crowds.

Having traditionally seen a loving and graceful Jesus, here you see a Jesus who detests sin and is zealous for that which is holy. While He was merciful and graceful, He did not stand for injustice. Ultimately, Jesus always put His relationship with the Father above any other relationship.

APPLICATION:
The honoring of God was never meant to be surrendered at the feet of popularity. His sacrifice and life are too precious to be exchanged for the wavering approval of the majority. May we prioritize and obey God before we obey our own desires or conform to popular belief. And may we continue to persevere in the sanctification of our lives as we pursue the perfect lamb, Jesus.
