Holy Week: Day 6

Day Six: Silent Saturday

BIBLE PASSAGE: John 16:32-33

Friday had gone and a silent Saturday morning had come. For the first time in 3 years, the disciples woke up without the Master by their side. It was the first day without Jesus. As they remembered their tortured messiah, they found themselves feeling defeated.

We usually focus on the day Jesus was crucified and on the day He was resurrected, but we easily forget about the second day. Can you imagine what the disciples felt that Saturday morning? We’ve all woken up the next morning after a tragedy and have felt “that ugly gut feeling”.

The Bible doesn’t give a lot of information regarding what the disciples did on Saturday. All that we know are their actions and feelings the day before, and their reaction to the resurrection the following day. As the Master was arrested, they fled in fear seeking a place to hide. All that they could do the next day was meditate and trust in a hope that seemed to be fleeting. On this silent sabbath the disciples had no option but to wait on the Lord and learn to rest in the midst of the storm.

APPLICATION:
Uncertainty in the unknown can lead the mind to one’s past, mistakes, or worst-case scenarios. Our instinct is never to be still and wait, yet this is what the disciples were forced to do on this Saturday. Our decision to be calm in the midst of the storm lets God know that we trust Him. The disciples had to trust not in what they saw, but in what God might be doing inside the tomb.

Beyond it all, it is important to remember that while Saturday may seem endless, the truth is that Saturday will end. The silence will end, the waiting will end, and Sunday will come. If you’re waiting, and you feel like nothing is happening, don’t lose hope. Your Sunday is coming.
